The Positives and Pitfalls of Free Website Hosting Services
Is a free online website hosting and building service really worth anything? There are those online marketing professionals that are more than a bit ‘down’ on the concept. These entrepreneurs will state that a free site lacks professionalism and does not make a good impression. That does sound like a harsh assessment. So many people utilize free website services. Why is this so if free sites are horrible for online strategizing? The fact of the matter is that such blanket statements are not completely accurate. Many people will use free websites effectively. If such sites were not helpful or sincerely beneficial to one’s marketing ventures then you would never see free websites at the volume or degree that you do.
And then there is the matter of budget….
No matter how interested someone may be in taking part in internet marketing, financial holdups can undermine any involvement in an online marketing campaign. This is not because we are adverse to investing funds or simply are not willing to do what is necessary to be successful. Rather, there may be budget limitations that prevent us from doing what we need to do in order to be effective. The fact of the matter is that many would be entrepreneurs must struggle with the limited financial resources they might have available to launch their online marketing campaigns. When it comes to the development, design, and publishing of a website, a major quandary arises because without a decent website, the potential to effectively engage in online marketing is impossible.
The way a free website works is simple: you would sign up with the service without any charge. The site would come with a simple template in which you would add text, pictures, and possibly audio/video files. Upon crafting what you wish to present within the design template, you would simply hit the publish button. Once you do this, your site is live. At this point, all you need to do is perform the necessary search engine optimization strategies required to boost the site’s presence in the top engines. So, what is wrong with this? It all sounds pretty basic, right?
There are a few minor hurdles you need to deal with and they include:
• You are very limited in the way in which you can design the site. You have a ready made template available to you…and that’s it.
• The bandwidth on a free site is low.
• Customer service help and support is limited.
• Advertisements will appear on your website since the free hosting service does need to make money somehow.
• The free website hosting service’s name will appear in the URL of the site which presents a hurdle for site branding.
• Some potential customers may not like to work with a site that is free.
Are these hurdles insurmountable? No, they most certainly are not. Many commercial websites are able to deal with the hurdles and perform effectively in the internet marketing world. Do not become bogged down worrying about any potential problems or issues that a free hosting/building service may present. Instead, try to make the absolute best with what you have. Not all entrepreneurs are able to launch their business ventures with a lot of start up capital. If you can only budget for a free website then so be it. Do what you can do and make the most of it. At least this will keep you involved with the game as opposed to being out of it trying to raise sufficient start up capital.
And keep one thing in mind: most free hosting services also offer the option of upgrading to a paid version. Once this occurs, you will have all the ‘freedoms’ you would be offered with a traditional website hosting plan. It is extremely well advised to upgrade to a full service paid website hosting plan as soon as your finances allow you to. This would eliminate any problems that working with a free website would possess.
